Space Required:
approximately 15' x 15' with ceiling hardware appropriate for suspending
3 media projectors. Greenhouse size can be adjusted to suit gallery space.
Materials:
conventional lumber, translucent plastic, iron pipes, concrete blocks, 10+
yards of dirt, plastic tarp to protect floor. All materials, except for
plastic, will be recuperated from the greenhouse in LaSalle.
Project Timeline:
October,
2005 - February, 2006: video production, historical research, materials
experimentation (i.e.: selecting vegetable seeds, adjusting light to insure
growth of plants and clear projection, etc.).
March, 2006
(one week set-up time) - deconstruct greenhouse, install dirt bed in gallery,
reconstruct greenhouse, install projectors, plant seeds, arrange lighting
and sound;
Additional
Details: The project will be supervised by Bernard O'Gorman, the owner of
the greenhouse. Mr. O'Gorman will also be responsible for planting the seeds.
He has offered to maintain the plants on a regular basis, and will answer
questions from gallery visitors, thus adding a performance element to the
installation. Pending grant approval, Spleenhouse will eventually
be transported to a location in Paris. This stage of the project is currently
in the development stages with the Detroit
Collaborative Design Center (the DCDC), which has engaged in similar
relocation projects. The DCDC has offered to support this project by integrating
it into their work on agrarian culture in the city of Detroit.
