L'EAU 19
In1958 or 1959 a huge rainstorm dumped fourteen inches of water onto Joe OíGormanís tomato plants. Needless to say, the crops were ruined, and Joe had to take on a milk route to pay the bills. In fact, the fields of Lot 19 were often flooded, and trenches had to be dug to divert the water. This history of flooding is clear evidence that Lot 19 might serve very well as a canal. The strip of land, like all the original French farmsteads in LaSalle, originally went clear down to the Detroit River, but no one ever considered digging such an ambitious canal. This new waterway could be accompanied with a low-rent, condominium development so that even the most modest of fishermen could enjoy dockside living. The project would renew wildlife in the area and would pave the way for construction contractors who are eager to provide sewer services to those undeveloped acres just west of Lot 19.
